"Since our last, was committed to York Castle Thomas Clegg, a private soldier in the 7th regiment of dragoons. Charged by the Coroner's inquest with killing and slaying Samuel Atkinson in the Township of Yeadon near Otley".

At this time, York Castle was the main prison for Yorkshire where serious criminals were held prior to appearing at the assizes at York. The prison is now the York Museum whilst the nearby Assizes Court continues to be used as York Crown Court.
